| Leech Lake Area Ice and Fishing Report |
|
Ice conditions are excellent with most areas measuring 20 inches plus! This past week has proven to be excellent for both panfish and walleyes! Last weekend most customers were catching walleyes in depths ranging from 23 feet to 37 feet. The best bite is still the twilight hours, primarily the 4:30 to 7:00 in the evenings and then from 6 to 9 in the mornings. Several of the customers this past week though didn't catch many walleyes during the twilight, rather they had rattle wheels sounding off on both sides of midnight. Two of the houses actually caught and released 21 to 25 inches 'eyes between 2 and 4 in the early morning hours. The crappie action has slowed down some but the sunfish are coming on strong. We are now catching slab bluegills in 12 to 14 foot of water on 2 area lakes. I like to use a glow tear drop #8 hook tipped with a fresh waxworm for the sunfish. The crappies that we are catching are in approximately 20 to 24 foot of water and they are suspended 3-5 feet up off of the bottom. The #8 Gold Kahle horizontal hooks are still the hook of choice for crappies tipped with a very small minnow. The Vexilar or similar fish locator works well to locate where the fish are suspended at. For those that have Aqua-Vu or similar underwater cameras, they can also locate and watch their potential lunch swimming by!! If anyone is interested, we do rent Aqua-Vu cameras to any of our customers that rent our fish houses.
